The Antique Tractor & Toy Newsletter

September/October Issue 2003

Greetings,
You are receiving this newsletter as a fellow collector, eBay customer or friend who appreciates preserving and remembering our agricultural heritage.

It??™s been dry and hot here in the Minnesota River Valley. We??™ve attended fewer tractor shows due to the heat. Lot??™s of 90 degree days and no measureable rain since July. The corn is looking tough and the ears are not filling out. Instead of 180 bushel to the acre corn, it might make 100. There have been some excellent antique power shows and attendance was still good considering the heat.
Well, this newsletter has again gotten pretty long-13 pages- but then again a lot of good stuff has happened in the past two months to share with you folks, so sit back, enjoy reading, and you just might want to save this in a folder somewhere on your PC. The future of this newsletter will discussed at the end, and your feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

Collector??™s Corner:
I often l ask manual and book buyers, if they are restoring or still working their machines. Here are some responses.
Hello again. My grandfather and uncle opened an International Harvester dealership in Mt.Sterling, Ky in the late 1950s. My father joined them in 1960 or 1961. The dealership>s name was Tipton Equipment Co. They sold IH industrial and farm equipment, and Cub Cadet lawn tractors. The dealership did not sell too many Cubs. By that time, the Cub was handled by the Industrial Division of IH and sold to cemeteries, schools, etc. as a mowing tractor. Most farmers in the Central and Eastern Ky. region grew tobacco, and bought the IH 140 tractor to cultivate the tobacco. Cubs were considered too small and too low to the ground to get above the plants when cultivating. Larry
Hello Bryan!!!
No I>m not a collector nor into restoring old tractor>s......LOL!!! I>m just a guy in the middle of rebuilding an Allis Chalmers WD-45.....And thought a manual would be handy!!......LOL!!!.....I hope to be able to get it back in the field soon......LOL!! Thanks,Gerald
Hello Bryan, I have subscribed to the "Antique Power" magazine per your suggestion and will start looking there for information. I have a lot to learn. I got interested in the "G" (Allis-Chalmers) just by chance. I was at the garage having some adjustments made to my mower and there was one there being worked on. I thought it was a real kick and mentioned it to my wife. Later the guy who owns the garage told me there was a "G" for sale by one of his customers and wondered if I was interested. I thought why not, and went, with my wife, to look at it. It happened to be my birthday when we went. My wife decided to buy it for me for a birthday present. Said it would give me something to do and keep me out of trouble. She is a wheeler dealer and talked the guy down and bought it for about a third of what he was asking. It is in good shape, had not been run for four years and had just been sitting in the barn. They dragged it to the garage where I get my work done. We changed the oil, put a booster to the battery and it kicked right off and ran fine. Not a lot of rust, nothing froze, but has a few things on it that should not be there, like a belly mower and a change to twelve volts. I believe we can find a six volt to switch back to right there in the garage, because he converted two other G>s to twelve volts a while back and kept the generators some place. Sorry to go on here but got carried away. Richard

Hi, I enjoyed the newsletter and sent a copy to my brother. Restoring tractors is a big thing around here. He and my nephew have finished several Fords andOlivers. They are working on an Oliver 770 and 550 now. Antique tractor shows and pulls are also big in this area. The thing that amazes me is that most of these old tractors still run well even though they have rust all over ~ they have had to do very little to the engines. Thanks again, Anna Marie

I live on 15 acres in Purcellville, Virginia and I bush-hog our fields (mostly for fun). Our tractor is a 1950 and I love it. Next year I>ll be pulling our float with the tractor wearing this T-shirt!
Paul, Purchased Ford 100th Anniversary T-shirt with 8N

Bryan,I ordered this manual (8n Operators) for my friend at his request. I believe his tractor is a 1952. He had just purchased 17 acres of land and needed a bushhog. So he went to the local tractor supply and found the 8N Tractor. He didn>t want to spend $14000.00 on a new tractor and he told me he remembered the same tractor as a young child because his grandfather had one. He paid $1700.00 for it. It is in pretty good condition. Is that a good price in your opinion? Also my friend stated he was going to buy an exhaust manifold and a muffler. Do you have any suggestions on suppliers of such products. Thank you for your time, Shawn and Tractor Owner-Josh. (Just8nParts.com is a good place to look and your local Napa and farm supply store. Hello Brian,
Thanks for your e-mail and the newsletter. We collect Tru Scale farm toys and my husband tinkers on restoring both Tru Scale and John Deere toys. My son, age 11, is a member of the Waterloo Boys in Kinzers, PA. He plans to restore a 620 some day, like his grandfather had. Now, we>re working on a 1930 Model A Ford that is all original with the original 57,000 miles on. It>s in great shape. Sorry I rambled but we>re excited about it. We>ll look forward to the book. Cindy & Dale Bosley
Hi. I have recently purchased 2 M>s . I enjoy buying tractors , doing repairs and reselling them. The manuals, of course save me time and I learn alot about the tractor. Frank
Hi Bryan
. I>ve been in the middle of fixing my barn; beams, sill plates, floor joists, etc, and have been very busy. My cousin wants to put hay in the barn if it ever stops raining. I have it under control now, I think! The H is one that I just bought at an auction; I always wanted one. I do own a Super M that my dad bought new in 1953, and a Super C he bought used in about 1957. The H has a big front end loader on it that weighs about as much as the tractor! But it>s paid for itself already by lifting beams into place on my barn repairs. It>s a great running old tractor. Paid $1400 for it. I also have a Cub, a Super A that is used to mow the lawn, a B that I bought from a nurse pal who was going through a divorce, and my uncle>s 400. All are original, faded paint and all, and most are used quite a bit around my farm. My parents bought a 100 acre farm in 1950, for $8,000. Really great farmland with some woods and a large creek. They have both passed away, and I recently purchased the property from the estate. I want to keep it in the family, in farmland, and out of the developer>s hands. I work in a hospital as an equipment repairman, and work on the farm in my spare time, what there is of it! It sure cut into my bicycling and running time, but it was something I had to do. Friends ask why I do it; I tell them if I have to explain it, they wouldn>t understand. The land is all rented out so I have a little income from it, enough to pay the taxes and insurance. Well, I have to go to bed. Thought I>d reply to your e-mail. Sorry it took so long. Thanks, Bill

Morning Bryan,
In answer to the question about the 1947 IH Farmall H . I went to an auction couple of years ago in hopes of getting this tractor. It had not been started in many years and was sitting in an old barn. I bought this for $350.00. I don>t know if the men bidders felt sorry for me and let me win (since I was a lady and didn>t know better) or if they knew something I didn>t about the tractor. My husband, son, grandson and brother-in-law came after the auction was over to "haul" the tractor home as they were sure it would not start. Wrong. They pulled it for several feet and it ran like a charm. Our son drove it about 7 miles getting it home. I waited out in the yard and heard them coming from about 3/4 of a mile away. Let me tell you, the traffic was tied up as if in a funeral procession! My son looked like he had seen a ghost when he pulled or bounced into the driveway. One of the wheels in front was out of alignment which made it a fight to keep it on the highway. To make matters even worse the glowing carbon cinders which flew from the exhaust fell on him scorching shirt and skin in several places. His dad thought at first he was swatting flies but soon realized he was knocking off the "embers".
Thankfully, he was only singed in couple of spots but the shirt did not fare too well.
After couple of hundred dollars later this tractor seems to be in Good shape. It does bush hogging every other week, can almost turn on a dime while pulling another bargain ($160.00 bush hog) plowed our garden for planting and provides our 14 year old grandson driving lessons. The Farmall is not a beauty but is looking better all the time. I don>t know if it will ever get to the showing off stage but it is certainly a cherished worker. I only wish it could talk and tell me the wonderful stories about the elderly couple who bought it new many years ago. We live on a mini farm of 3 1/2 acres and last year set 110 fruit trees in hopes of leaving our children a small but perhaps profitable business in years to come. Now, I hope you are not sorry that you asked about the future of the 1947 IH Farmall model "H".
Thanks again. I>ve marked your site and know where to visit when I need some tractor HELP. Emma Lou Wells

Hi,Bryan
I have seen your ads on ebay and wanted to correct you on the life of the Cub. It was first released in 1947 as you said but it ran for a lot longer than 7 years. It was built in the Farmall line from 1947 to 1979 or 33 years. In 1955 the Cub Lo-Boy came out first as a Farmall and later switched to International when the company stated designating farming tractors as Farmalls and painting them red and utility or industrial tractors as Internationals and painting them yellow and white. In 1969 the Lo-Boy became the International Cub Lo-Boy 154 until 1972. The Farmall/International 140 has it>s roots based in another tractor all together. The Farmall A which was replaced with the Super A, then the 100, the 120, the 130, and lastly to the 140. Other than engine and horse power being different, the pto on the Cubs turn counter-clockwise at about 1200 rpm while the A-140 turn clockwise and at 540 rpm like all other standard ptos. Anyway you may want to change the first line of your item description so that you won>t look quite as uninformed. By the way, I have 3 red Cubs, >49, >53, and >55, and 5 Cub 154s. I have lots of the major equipment for them and am in the process of restoring so that I can use them to do truck farming. Benny

Bryan, Little slow getting back to you. News Letter sounds good, however I was not the one who restored our Farmall A . I was talking to our neighbor one day and indicated we were interested in a A Farmall and he just happened to have a couple he was restoring so I purchased one from him. I think he may have a picture of it before he started working on it. If you>re looking for a story on the restoration aspect you might want to talk to him. He said it used to be owned by the County Road Commission in a neighboring county and a relative of his recognized it as he apparently was employed bythe Road Commission that owned it. We are located in Michigan>s Upper Peninsula. All of us who live in the Upper Peninsula are affectionately called "Yoopers" and those who live in the Lower Peninsula, below the Mackinac Bridge, are referred to as "Trolls" by the so called "Yoopers". The Farmall A has always been in "Yooper Land" as far as we know giving it a special meaning to us... Wayne

The Tractor in the Pasture
by Lee Klancher
To the tractor lover, there is something magical about the tractor in the pasture. It represents wisdom, strength, and former glory as the plower of soil, tender of crops, and the backbone of the nation. Much like the aging racehorse or the prize bull, after its working days are done, old tractors find resting spots on the edges of fields, alongside barns, or in the hedgerows. Today, these rusting piles of iron not only represent the memories of nostalgic farmers (past or present), they represent possibilities of restoration, rejuvenation, and new life as sparkling representations of an age gone by. This book captures scenes of old, retired tractors and couples them with the very sentiments that makes restoration an increasingly popular tractor hobby.
